The southward extension of Line 5, the first Metro line to go through Qianhai, will begin service Sept. 28, Shenzhen Metro has confirmed.
Upon operation, the total length of the Shenzhen Metro network will reach 292.6 kilometers.
The 7.7-kilometer extension, also called Phase II of Line 5, starts at Qianhaiwan Station and ends at Chiwan Station, including three transfer stations with the existing lines 2 and 9 and future Line 15. It runs through Qianhai-Shekou FTA and will bring the total number of stations on Line 5 to 34.
Using the extension line, passengers from Qianhaiwan will be able to reach Chiwan in 15 minutes. This will greatly shorten the travel time between Bao’an, Qianhai and Shekou. As Liwan and Chiwan stations are close to the Dananshan and Xiaonanshan areas and residential neighborhoods, the opening of the extension line will attract more people to the Shekou area.
Passengers can transfer to Line 2 at Chiwan Station, Line 9 at Qianwan Station and the future Line 15 at Railway Park Station.
At Qianhaiwan Station on Line 5, passengers can transfer to Line 1 or Line 11 to Shenzhen Railway Station in Luohu or Shenzhen International Airport in Bao’an, respectively. In the future, they will be able to transfer to Xili Railway Station through an interchange at Railway Park Station.
Metro stations along the extension line have no-barrier elevators. Each station is also equipped with tread boards to help physically challenged people in wheelchairs board the train.
Each station will look like an art gallery, with designs displayed on an artistic wall that is about 11 meters long.
The designs at each station reflect the natural environment and cultural features of the areas surrounding the station.
